Best Books from Colombia
Colombia's literary reputation rests on a single colossal achievement: Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, which invented the term "magical realism" for a whole generation of readers and won the Nobel Prize in 1982. But the tradition runs wider and deeper. Tomás González writes with quiet intensity about family and loss; Fernando Vallejo's autobiographical novels are some of the most viscerally honest in Latin American literature; Juan Gabriel Vásquez has mapped Colombia's violent political history with the precision and compassion of a great novelist. Bogotá's Hay Festival has made the city a hub of the Spanish-language literary world.
